WBF-Japan expand cooperation for the sixth year in a row

Tirana – On the 28th of October 2024, Ambassador of Japan to Albania, H.E. Ms. KATO Kikuko, and the Executive Director of the Western Balkans Fund (WBF), Mr. Gjergj Murra, signed a cooperation agreement for the project titled “Balanced Development through Regional Cooperation -Impact among Local Authorities-“. This initiative aims to strengthen people-to-people networks among local authorities in the Western Balkans while prioritizing collaboration with civil society organizations.

Japan will provide €51,000 to support the WBF in organizing a conference that focuses on enhancing regional cooperation and dialogue among stakeholders. This project seeks to empower local authorities to share best practices, identify challenges, and collaborate effectively to foster equitable and sustainable development across the region.

Japan’s support is a part of the Western Balkans Cooperation Initiative, launched by former Prime Minister ABE Shinzo in 2018. This initiative aims to facilitate socio-economic reforms and advance the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union. Japan recognizes the critical role of the WBF in promoting cooperation and achieving these goals. This marks the 6th project Japan has provided financial assistance to the WBF, following previous support for projects aimed at countering the spreading fake news and misinformation/disinformation which are serious obstacles to promoting regional cooperation in the Western Balkans.

In the meeting prior to the signing ceremony, Ambassador Kato and Mr. Murra addressed the importance of regional cooperation in overcoming common challenges. They emphasized that building strong connections among local authorities is essential for promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development in the Western Balkans as a whole.

Ambassador Kato reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting the region and exploring new opportunities for collaboration with local authorities and civil society organizations.
