Supporting a carbon-neutral Western Balkans

The aspiration for a carbon-neutral Western Balkans Region is a shared commitment among all Contracting Parties (CPs). However, bridging the gap between this ambitious goal and current reality remains a considerable challenge.

Most in the WB area are heavily reliant on coal, making efforts to phase it out daunting and often insurmountable. Additionally, all our members are threatened by energy insecurity, which poses an additional threat to the green agenda.

Amidst this complex landscape, Liron Gjocaj, an environmental researcher and activist based in Kosovo*, has just published a comprehensive study (currently available only In Albanian) providing interesting solutions.

Supported by a WBF Move Grant, for over four months, Liron analyzed and compared the energy situation in four Contracting Parties.

Now available on our website, Liron’s study offers a profound understanding of the regional context, accompanied by actionable recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders to navigate this challenging transition effectively.

Liron’s mobility, which took him from North Macedonia to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Poland, was part of the Third Call for Proposals of the WBF Move Grants.

As the third Call for WBF Move Grants remains open until March 20, 2024, individuals holding passports from any of our six Contracting Parties are encouraged to apply.
