Tirana – The “#LeadBalkans – Regional Leaders of Diaspora” Conference kicked off today in Tirana, bringing together over 100 regional leaders, officials, academics, and media representatives from across the Western Balkans.
The conference places a strong focus on the need to build a stronger regional network in which diaspora is seen not only as a source of remittances, but as a strategic partner for development, integration and addressing shared regional challenges.
Acting as host, the Deputy Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of Albania, Ms. Miriam Shyti, underlined that “we have entered a moment in which diaspora has been placed at the center of strategic thinking about our European future”.
On behalf of the Montenegrin Presidency of the Western Balkans Fund for 2026, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, H.E. Ervin Ibrahimović, delivered a recorded address, emphasizing that “diaspora is the best ambassador of our culture and a crucial partner in supporting development and strengthening vital connections between our region and the wider world.”
On behalf of the Embassy of Japan in Tirana, the Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. Omori, greeted the #LeadBalkans Conference, underlining Japan’s deep commitment to the Western Balkans region and its continued support for initiatives that foster regional cooperation and stronger institutional links with diaspora communities.
The Executive Director of the Western Balkans Fund, Dr. Gjergj Murra, stressed that the conference is not only a meeting point for exchanging ideas, but also a concrete step toward identifying long-term regional solutions, especially in the context of human capital loss and the need for stronger cooperation with diaspora communities.
The Director of the International Visegrad Fund, Ms. Kapustová Helbichová, also welcomed the regional leaders gathered in Tirana, reaffirming support for regional dialogue, cooperation, and stronger cross-border partnerships.
