Meet Tomasz Woźniakowski, who spent his research stay in Sarajevo, exploring fiscal and military integration in former Yugoslavia – and the lessons it holds for the European Union’s efforts toward common defence and financing.
“I aimed to map out the institutional and budgetary mechanisms behind Yugoslav military spending, analyse fiscal–military coordination across federal units, and draw relevant insights for current EU debates,” Tomasz explains.
To refine his research, Tomasz engaged in eight in-depth consultations with scholars from three departments of the University of Sarajevo and the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology. “These conversations were crucial – they helped me sharpen my proposal and maintain interdisciplinary rigor,” he shares.
Finding the right host institution required researching relevant experts, teams, and ongoing projects and reaching out to international offices, which
Tomasz describes as a great first point of contact. The fellowship gave him not only academic insights, but also lasting connections that will shape his future publications, grant proposals, and institutional collaborations in both Poland and the broader European context.
Mr Woźniakowski is on of the beneficiaries of the Western Balkans – Visegrad Fellowship.
The most recent Call for Proposals of the Fellowship just closed earlier this month with 104 applications and we are currently on the evaluation process.
