Empowering sustainable green solutions

Regional collaboration stands at the heart of sustainable development efforts in the Western Balkans, and the recent 4th Regional Workshop held in Tirana, organized by the Ecodesign and Management Institute – EDMI, is a testament to this shared commitment.

The event is part of the broader project titled “Establishing Waste Management Associations in the Western Balkans,” which brings together four key partner organizations from across the region: Planktonium NGO based in Skopje, the Advocacy Training and Resource Center – ATRC from Prishtina, Ecodesign and Management Institute – EDMI in Tirana, and #Zeleni Dom – Green Home from Podgorica.

Together, these partners are forging a path toward stronger regional cooperation in waste management and fostering the adoption of circular economy principles. The Tirana workshop placed a spotlight on practical examples and impactful initiatives that are driving change. Circular economy businesses like RecyAL and the Circular Economy Park were presented as models of sustainable innovation, showcasing how recycling and resource efficiency can become viable business practices.

The role of the Macedonia Solid Waste Association (MASWA) was also highlighted, demonstrating how a national body can contribute to shaping waste policies and building institutional frameworks for effective waste management.

Additionally, the Municipality of Tirana presented its own experiences in applying circular economic practices at the local government level, reinforcing the importance of municipalities in implementing practical solutions on the ground. The overarching message of the workshop was clear: regional cooperation is not just beneficial but essential for addressing shared environmental challenges.

By uniting knowledge, resources, and strategies, the participating organizations and local authorities are laying the groundwork for improved waste management systems that align with European standards and contribute to long-term environmental sustainability.

The project is co-funded by the European Union through the ERC Grants under IPA III – the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance, emphasizing the EU’s continued support for regional initiatives that aim to build resilience, strengthen governance, and prepare partner countries for integration into the European community.
