Challenges in economic cooperation, innovation, sustainable development, environmental issues, and integration reforms among Western Balkan communities were discussed in Tirana during the “SYNERGY 2025 – Synergy Between Local Governments for Regional Integration” conference.
The event was organized by the Western Balkans Fund in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Albania. The Japanese ambassador emphasized her country’s support.
“Japan launched a cooperation initiative for Western Balkan countries in 2018, aiming to support socio-economic reforms toward EU integration while also promoting reconciliation and regional cooperation.
As a global partner, we strive to support as many countries as possible, as seen in the case of the Western Balkans, where we are undertaking this initiative,” said Ambassador Kato Kikuko.
The ambassador highlighted the significance of the gathering in Tirana, bringing together representatives from multiple countries.
“This meeting is part of the Western Balkans cooperation initiative. This year’s theme is ‘Synergy’ between local governments, which play a key role in democratization and regional development. The topic encourages all stakeholders, including local governance ministers, mayors, and organizations, to accelerate efforts toward equitable development. The conference serves as a platform for stakeholders to discuss and exchange experiences,” said Ambassador Kato Kikuko.
The initiative brings together various countries and organizations in a joint effort related to local governance reform within the European integration process.
“As the region’s countries move closer to European integration, we have sought to analyze the extent to which local governments have aligned their policies with EU integration,” stated Dafina Beqiri from the Western Balkans Fund.
The three-day conference addresses topics related to sustainable development, economic growth, and innovative financing strategies for cities in the Western Balkans.
