The first workshop was held in Belgrade from September 4 to 6 as part of the Empowering Journalism Educators in the Western Balkans for Conflict & Crisis Reporting project, which is supported by the Western Balkans Fund (WBF).
This workshop, intended for journalism teachers, aimed to present a guide that is part of a comprehensive tool for improving the education of young journalists and lawyers. The workshop also served as a platform for exchanging opinions and collecting feedback that will help in further development and adaptation of the tool.
Special attention is paid to the role of journalists in reporting on contemporary armed conflicts. The participants discussed the importance of regional connection and joint action, because greater success in this area can only be achieved through synergy. It was also emphasized that the terminology of international law is crucial not only in a legal sense, but also in a social sense, and that the imprecise use of terms can have a negative impact on the understanding of the general public.
The participants also touched upon the existing courses at the faculties in the region that could integrate the guide as part of their teaching. The importance of continuing this cooperation and developing formal and informal educational programs that would enable the acquisition of certificates signed by partner universities was highlighted.
The project was recognized as an important step towards raising awareness of the correct use of international law terms in the media, as well as the role of journalists in reporting on wars and post-conflict processes, including the work of the Hague Tribunal.
Workshop is part of a project implemented by Beograd International Law Club, University of Donja Gorica and Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Sarajevo.
